American scientists, as a result of many years of research, concluded that the main factor in the longevity of a person is his nutrition, and even small positive changes in the diet can promote prolongation of life.
In the course of the research, the team of specialists from 1986 to 2010 observed 74 thousand participants in the experiment, studying the relationship between changes in their diet in the first 12 years and the risk of premature death in the next 12 years. At the same time, the quality of food meant the share of healthy food in the diet, such as unrefined grains, vegetables, fruits, and fish.
It was found that improving the quality of the diet by 20% reduced the likelihood of an earlier death by 8-17%. For example, only the daily replacement of one glass of sweet drink with a portion of nuts contributed to the prolongation of life. On the contrary, a decrease in the quality of nutrition increased the risk of premature death by 6-12%.
It is interesting that those participants in the experiment, who generally led an unhealthy lifestyle, but began to eat more healthy food, lived on average longer than those who continued to eat improperly.
